This is such a challenging aria and he seems to be able to negotiate it without looking like he's working that hard. The high C at the end with that amount of sound is just unreal. What an amazing artist.
This aria is much more challenging than what Gedda made it sound like. Soft aria in French with high notes. Take a lot of control to sing it as softly as this and with impeccable passaggio. He was one of a kind in term of vocal technique. He was 55 here. By all mean, bringing any other famous tenors out there and asked them to sing anywhere near as good as this at 55. There isn't anyone.
So expressive and clear. You could hear the palm trees swaying in the breeze of that tempo. This is from The Pearl Fishers by Georges Bizet. The coastal breezes of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), moonlight on the rippling ocean, palms swishing, the smell of the sea, rippling bodies glistening, looking at the object of their dreams, the 'goddess', Leila. I love this opera. These are very high notes for a man to sing, simply amazing. Maestro Gedda.
“One of the greatest. “ or “in my opinion the greatest”! At that level they simply cannot be compared to one another. And moreover we generally don’t know all the others.

Великолепный!!! Швед с русской душой. Сын и гордость двух народов. Потрясающий тенор. Жаль, что так больше не поют. Эту запись можно слушать часами. Спасибо!
Everyone's talking about Gedda, though warranted! But nobody's mentioning the wonderful piano work that helps amplify the raw emotion of this performance. Both the pianist and Gedda did splendiferous work making a stunning piece of art for all to see!
Sometimes within this immaculate performance it sounds as though the accompaniment manipulates and takes over as the principal in the relationship. In short both are just brilliant for each other

Since I discovered this version, I find myself coming back and listening to it every single day, and sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. It's in my opinion, with Gigli's version, the most emotional interpretation of this song. You can feel the pain of the words. And the fact that Gedda looks vulnerable on the stage here for some reasons, almost like a child over school stage performing an exam on behalf of all school board, add a lot to the drama of this version. This is Gold. And the low views numbers mean one thing, jewels are always hard to find.
C'est un bonheur qu'il y ait tant de merveilleuses interprétations (dont celle-là !) de cette mélodie ;laissons bien sûr les préférences s'exprimer, en termes certes parfois excessifs, mais passionnés :là est l'essentiel.
I will add the same comment. Listening to Nikolai Gedda sing this aria from Bizet's Pearl Fishers is just heartbreaking. I find it hard to comprehend the technicalities and style as the emotion is so over powering. Each time I listen and watch this video I am overcome by the piercing of my heart. And didn't the audience respond. A remarkable video.
merci Monsieur Gedda! Vous avez une manière de chanter qui est conforme à celle de mon professeur qui s'appelle Magali Lozano, et c'est la première fois que je vois un grand chanteur , chanter de la sorte.... ouf😀
Gedda floats a sustained heartbreakingly beautiful high note at 3:01, mezza voce, and again at 3:28 both effortless! A touching performance with the haunting melody from a single piano, and a slight smile, Gedda knows his voice, even at this age, is in fine form. Thank you for posting this elegant version. 💔
'Gedda floats a sustained heartbreakingly beautiful high note at 3:01'. beautiful description. In 1974 I heard on radio Gedda perform this aria, recorded I believe in the 60's and let me tell you, I shiver at the thought of it. The floating, sustained note was so effortless, so tenderly soft, carrying through a musical silent note to the descent. Again, effortless, no straining, a gentle quiet note which, as you say, was heartbreakingly beautiful to be unforgettable and unmatched. Sadly, I cannot find that performance on youtube.
The keyword for me here is effortless. Gedda was known for his upper register so his high notes were in abundant. However, he was one of very few tenors who could sing in such a relaxed yet controlled manner. Many tenors past and present seem to sing with such a strain that sometimes made me feel like they were about to burst into flame. Sounding beautiful is one thing but sounding effortlessly beautiful is another thing and the maestro was so good at that.
This is an amazing technique! Looks almost like playback singing! To look this relaxed when singing difficult pieces is extraordinary! Kaufmann should watch this 😄

I can't believe how effortless he makes this appear. Though Bjorling is my idol, I have always thought Gigli's performance of this to be the greatest. Maybe I was wrong.
I am still returning. His voice is so creamy, so controlled, so beautiful. He sings with a trace of a typical smile without any visible effort. His versatility was incredible indeed. He could sing as soft as Gigli. His ringing voice shock shocks me incredibly in selected pars, mainly from a certain age. Neverending admiration
Hah! Yes, I noticed that smile. I think he knows (rightfully) that his voice is in fine form. So effortlessly hitting that mezza voce high sustain, like no other.
@@shodanart I saw his smile suddenly drop. Something happened, I wouldn't even notice. Suddenly I saw a professional singer, Maestro Gedda, watching his breath, every tone, every phrase. Not falsetto, head voice connected to chest resulting in a somewhat mixed tone, but with good cord closure and harmonics. Beautiful indeed, Gedda is a master of this fabulous head voice.
